York St John University’s global research profile has been further strengthened as Professor of Environmental Sustainability is elected to one of Europe’s most distinguished academic bodies.

The Academia Europaea brings together leading scholars across disciplines to advance excellence in research and provide independent scientific advice to policymakers. With a global membership of over 6,000 renowned experts, it promotes interdisciplinary insights that inform policy across Europe.

Widely regarded as Europe’s foremost academy for science, humanities and letters, the Academia Europaea selects members based on peer group nomination and following a rigorous review of scholarly excellence.

Professor Gang Pan’s election highlights his global expertise and research excellence in environmental science and sustainable water management. He is recognised for pioneering the development of Modified Local Soil (MLS) and nanobubble–MLS integrated technologies, which provide scalable, nature-based solutions for critical environmental challenges. These include harmful algal bloom control; eutrophication mitigation; sediment pollution remediation; and greenhouse gas reduction. These innovations have been widely applied in real-world water systems and are increasingly influencing international approaches to ecosystem restoration and sustainable development.

“I am honoured to be elected to the Academia Europaea,” said Professor Pan. “This recognition reflects not only my own work, but also the collaborative efforts between colleagues in the UK, Europe, and China. It reinforces the importance of developing practical, science-based solutions to global environmental challenges.”

Professor Rob Mortimer, Pro Vice Chancellor: Research and International, added:

"Professor Gang Pan's election to the Academia Europaea, one of Europe's most prestigious scholarly bodies, is great testament to his long-standing research tackling a wide range of environmental pollution problems. It is fantastic for York St John University to have one of our leading researchers recognised in this way."

Professor Pan’s research plays a central role in advancing interdisciplinary collaboration across environmental science, sustainability, and global partnerships. His work aligns closely with the University’s strategic priorities in research impact, internationalisation, and societal engagement.
